One Bangkok recycles autoclaved lightweight concrete waste into Q-CON sound barriers

One Bangkok, Thailand’s largest integrated development in the central business district of Bangkok, together with SCG and Quality Construction Products Public Company Limited (Q-CON) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the recycling of autoclaved lightweight concrete (ALC) waste into Q-CON sound barriers for underpass entrance to the project.

This partnership supports One Bangkok’s ambition to achieve ‘zero waste to landfill’ goals to maximise resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and raise the bar on construction industry standards in Thailand towards a sustainable future.

Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, group CEO of Frasers Property Limited, said, “In line with Frasers Property’s commitment to be a net-zero carbon corporation by 2050, the development of One Bangkok is conceived to set new standards in terms of design, quality and sustainability for well-balanced living in Thailand.

“We look for strategic partnerships with industry leaders who share our vision to create long-term value through sustainable construction practices using circular economy principles. The latest collaboration with SCG and Q-CON, our long-term business partners, is another testament to our unwavering determination to pursue that vision.”

Nithi Patarachoke, president, cement-building materials business at SCG, added, “We are committed to sustainable development and have applied circular economy principles to the construction industry as part of solving environmental issues such as the overexploitation of natural resources, energy shortage, management of construction waste and greenhouse gas emissions in which SCG aims to reach the net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.

“Our focus is to optimise resource consumption and recycle unused materials with the ‘Turn Waste to Value’ concept. We want to reduce material waste as well as create added value to waste materials from construction, as witnessed in the previous partnership with One Bangkok.”

This latest partnership is also said to be the first large-scale use of recycled ALC waste into Q-CON sound barriers in a real estate development project. The process encompasses crushing ALC waste (from the construction of One Bangkok) into aggregate to be re-used as a mixture in the production of Q-CON sound barriers for use in the underpass entrance to the project.

The total volume of ALC used in building One Bangkok accounted for over 1.6 million blocks, equivalent to a total weight of over 10,000 t, with standard wastage allowed for 1.8-2%. This means that, with the ALC recycling process in place, up to 200 t of ALC waste can be recycled and reused, both in the form of substitute of sand filtration in wastewater treatment and material for producing Q-CON sound barriers for use as cladding in underpass entrance covering a total area of over 1,850 sq m.

Narongvate Vajanapanich, managing director, Q-CON and cement-building materials business, SCG, said, “Q-CON is Thailand’s leading manufacturer of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks who strives to achieve the highest level of resource efficiency. Our products receive Energy Saving Label and Carbon Reduction Label as well as SCG Green Choice mark.

“We are proud to be a part of the development of One Bangkok by recycling aerated brick waste from the construction of the project and turning it into Q-CON sound barrier. The resulting product from recycling material is easy to install and possesses durable, outstanding sound-absorbing and energy-efficient properties and helps improve the environment for us all.”

One Bangkok is the largest integrated development in the city’s central business district with a complete mix of commercial, residential, retail and recreational uses, and an investment value of over THB120 billion, spanning a total land area of 166,400 sq m. When fully completed, the project will include five premium Grade A office towers, four distinct retail precincts, five luxury and lifestyle hotels and three luxury residential towers designed with people-centric, sustainable and smart city living concepts.

One Bangkok aims to be the first project in Thailand to receive the highest certified LEED platinum for Neighbourhood Development, and the WELL Building Standard for health and well-being of all occupants, setting a new benchmark for green and sustainable development for Thailand. The first phase is scheduled for opening in the fourth quarter of 2023.
